I've known Sara for ten years. Since I met her she has always worked for Grazia until reaching the summit as head of fashion for grazia.it.
I remember exactly when she made an article about my first clothing collection where she, as an illustrator, reinterpreted my world in a sublime way. Sara has red hair, a kind soul that can also be read from her illustrations and her beautiful little baby always smiling.

What did you have breakfast with this morning?
I would like to answer with bread and Nutella instead I have to tell you the truth, the one I eat almost always: whole white yogurt, jam, almonds, and puffed barley. Ah and Nescafé in high cup and Krill's capsules. #weird

What are your favorite things in the neighborhood you live in?
I like walking down the street and discovering beautiful things where, in theory, they should not be there. I live between Corvetto and Ripamonti, one of the districts considered to be one of the worst in Milan, and since I've been here with my husband we do nothing but discover nice places, good pastry shops, interesting buildings, roads with potential. Francesco's dream is to open an Instagram account or a blog to collect these discoveries and make it clear that you should not be afraid of an area just because it is multi-ethnic. Maybe we'll never do it but the name I already have it: Corvetto State Of Mind.

Do you have rituals that help you feel confident about yourself?
The headphones with the music give me security and strength when I walk down the street, especially during the no-days and, lately, the Nescafé, in a big cup as I said before, in the morning. I swear they do not pay me, also because I stopped drinking coffee about 4 years ago so for me this is a great revolution and a good reason to get up in a good mood.

Which human characteristic wins you most?
Empathy. It is my favorite human characteristic, although unfortunately, I see less and less around. And the ability that human beings have to recover from great suffering. Before, when I was observing someone struggling with a particularly difficult situation, managing it with great strength, I wondered how it was possible. Then it happened to me and I learned that the strength that pulls out in some situations is really amazing.

What do you find useful when you're feeling stagnant?
I do research. I immerse myself in the books of art, photography, and illustration that I keep on the ground, in plain sight in the living room, just because I need to know that I'm there ready to help me when the mind gets dark and I lose focus on what I am and I really like.

Is drawing a hobby or a job for you? How do you integrate it into your life?
For me, a job can be considered such if there is retribution, so, for this reason, I do not conceive the works made for free that are so fashionable in our environment. So I would say that for me design is a hobby even if I find it a restrictive definition. It's a great passion, it's my thing, that I feel very personal. When I draw, I can not tell you why, but I feel unique and special. It is also a great effort because I need calm and concentration, so that lately between work and baby I draw very little. It 's curious how even the "thought" of having the ability to draw, even just doing research in fact, already gives me satisfaction and pleasure.

Show me five illustrators that everyone should know?

  1. Surely Bilibin
  2. Arthur Rackham
  3. Lisbeth Zwerger
  4. Alan Lee
  5. Shaun Tan

And my teacher and mentor, Giacinto Gaudenzi, a wonderful man with eyes like Gandalf and endless anecdotes.

If you were invited as a speaker for a conference and you did not have to talk about your work, what would you talk about?
Tolkien's and how he managed to create a world starting from a language. I would be boring, in fact, I've already bored myself.

If you could invite three people to dinner, who would you invite and why?
My husband Francesco, because he is the person who knows more about movies, TV series, and music, as well as being the best fork I know. Daniela Losini, my great friend and Grazia.it's Head of Beauty, because there is no argument she cannot discuss and discuss and she does not have a well-formed opinion. And Nick Cave. I would be silent in adoration, but there would be Daniela to make the conversation happen.

What was your biggest failure that then became the basis for your future success?
Maybe just the fact that I did not become a professional illustrator. In this way I had to channel this desire for creativity in other fields, I developed a love for photography, for images, for videos, for publishing, and for communication. And now I have the opportunity of working to put together people who have made being artists, a term recently too exploited, a real profession and create beautiful things with them. I feel really lucky. For two years I worked as an assistant in the company and I felt really empty and maybe yes, a bit 'failed. Then when I moved to Milan I held out for a year without work, rejecting proposals that I knew would make me return to that situation for me unsustainable, continuing to study, to do research. I was really running out when the right proposal came. And everything started all over again.

What have you changed your mind over the past two years and why?
I often change opinion. I'm not so pedantic as to believe I already know everything. People today see either black or white by party, do not inform, read or read-only slogans or fake news, without verifying the sources. I find it scary.
I changed my mind when I got informed and I realized that I was wrong, I changed my mind when a friend told me something that I thought was one way and instead it was in another, I changed my mind when I thought someone was like that because on social was shown as such and then, in reality, it was completely different.
Most people interpret the change of opinion as a weakness, for me, it is a symptom of great intelligence and desire for comparison.

What would you write on a billboard in the center of Milan?
Love is love is love is love is love.

7 Small Talks

  • Your daily uniform: I have two uniforms, the 90s-style girl with jeans and Gazelle or the romantic/decadent Florence Welch style
  • The song of the heart: Tom's Diner by Suzanne Vega, I sing every night to my baby to make him sleep
  • Your perfume: changes often, I'm not a perfume expert, but I like being strange. At the moment I use Prada Olfactories Nue Au Soleil and SoNude from Costume National
  • The favorite flowers: those in the field, from any country
  • Your comfort food: PIZZA, beer and ice cream
  • Your favorite city: London, but I'm also crazy about Sicily and my hometown Urbino
  • A friend of yours to interview? What should I ask? My cousin Federica. She has lived in New York for a lifetime and teaches at Columbia University, but she is very Italian inside and out. She's one of the most empathetic people I know and she's like a sister to me. You should ask her anecdotes about the looks of her American students in the various seasons, it's something that always makes me smile.

Ho incontrato Sara circa dieci anni fa.

Quale caratteristica umana ti conquista maggiormente?
L'empatia.

Sicuramente Bilibin, Arthur Rackham, Lisbeth Zwerger, Alan Lee e Shaun Tan.

E Nick Cave.

Love is love is love is love is love is love.
