Fabiana Fierotti

Fabiana has always fascinated me. She worked for Pig Magazine, an independent magazine that existed when I was studying at Istituto Marangoni. She used for an editorial the Quercus dress, powder pink in Crêpe de Chine, from my first clothing collection. Since then I have seen through her photographs one of my favorite marriages, I saw the creation of her own personal project and I saw the birth of a new life.

Alla Carta was born with the intention of celebrating one of the oldest Italian habits, conviviality. How much is it for a company to share a table with others?
For our society, it is certainly fundamental. In Italy, the table is the meeting place par excellence for all families, friends, couples who respect each other: fight, peacemaking, laughing, crying, falling in love. Everything happens. Have you ever spent an entire evening around a table, without even touching the sofa in the living room? It is a purely magical place.

Flipping through the pages of the magazine you see very little publicity, a rarity and certainly an important curatorial choice. Why?
Alla Carta is a free magazine. Free to express itself, free to make mistakes, free to be ironically naive. Both I and Yara have two formations far from the advertising space, so we limit ourselves to tell our project with a lot of passion and a wealth of details.
It is difficult in Italy to move the dormant consciences of the companies that are planning because for some mysterious reason it is more interesting for them to invest in the last of the last independent English magazines, which maybe ends after two releases, rather than believing in a concrete and lasting project forward by two young women in Milan.

The female body is told in a delicate, non-sexualised way, uncommon in Italian publishing. What do you want to convey?
We depict women as we see them and how we are: beautiful because they are true, even in their own faults.

You are Sicilian. Have the colors and the warmth of this land influenced your creative vision?
Surely they pushed me to demand the maximum from my life and not stop before the first obstacle.
I learned to always struggle to get what makes me happy.

Since a few years you became a mother, how did motherhood change the relationship with your body, your role, and work?
Radically. I do not think Italy is a country for mothers, for women who work hard and want to be present mothers.
Lately, this topic makes me think how so many women before us have struggled to have equal rights compared to men and now we can see how much their struggles are really making a difference. Today, women hold positions of prestige in fields that in the past were only the male prerogative but we lack a little 'ground underfoot because we find ourselves having achieved results without however that the State and the Italian system have adapted to this new figure, contributing and giving support for the management of the family.

• The favorite movie. Twentieth-century Bertolucci, if instead, I had to count the largest number of times I saw a film, the primacy would go to Pretty Woman.

Fabiana mi ha sempre affascinata, ha occhi scuri e profondi, un sorriso luminoso e spesso un rossetto rosso. Ha lavorato per Pig Magazine, una rivista indipendente che esisteva quando io studiavo all'Istituto Marangoni. Ha utilizzato per un editoriale l'abito Quercus rosa cipria in Crêpe de Chine della mia prima collezione di abbigliamento. Da allora ho visto attraverso le sue fotografie un matrimonio stupendo, la creazione di un suo progetto personale e ho visto la nascita di una nuova vita.

Alla Carta nasce con l'intento di celebrare una della più antiche abitudini italiane, la convivialità. Quanto è importate per una società condividere un tavolo con altri?
Per la nostra società è sicuramente fondamentale. In Italia, la tavola è il luogo di incontro per eccellenza per tutte le famiglie, gli amici e le coppie che si rispettino: si litiga, si fa pace, si ride, si piange, ci si innamora. Succede veramente di tutto. Non ti è mai capitato di trascorrere un’intera serata attorno a un tavolo, senza nemmeno toccare il divano del salotto? È un luogo puramente magico.

Sfogliando le pagine del magazine si vedono pochissime pubblicità, una rarità e sicuramente una scelta curatoriale importante. Come mai?
Alla Carta è una rivista libera. Libera di esprimersi, libera di sbagliare, libera di essere ironicamente naive. Sia io che Yara abbiamo due formazioni ben lontane dalla vendita di spazi pubblicitari, per cui ci limitiamo a raccontare il nostro progetto con tantissima passione e dovizia di particolari.
E' difficile in Italia smuovere le coscienze sopite delle aziende che pianificano perché per qualche misteriosa ragione è più interessante per loro investire sull’ultima delle ultime riviste indipendenti inglesi, che magari chiude dopo due uscite, piuttosto che credere in un progetto concreto e duraturo portato avanti da due giovani donne a Milano.

Il corpo femminile viene raccontato in modo delicato, non sessualizzato, non comune nella editoria italiana. Cosa vuoi trasmettere?
Raffiguriamo le donne così come le vediamo e come siamo: belle perché vere, anche nei propri difetti.

Sei siciliana. I colori ed il calore di questa terra hanno influenzato la tua visione creativa?
Sicuramente mi hanno spinta a pretendere il massimo dalla mia vita e a non fermarmi davanti al primo ostacolo.
Ho imparato a lottare sempre per ottenere ciò che mi rende felice.

Da qualche anno sei diventata madre, come la maternità ha cambiato il rapporto con il tuo corpo, il tuo ruolo e lavoro?
Radicalmente. Non penso l’Italia sia un paese per mamme, per donne che lavorano duramente e vogliono essere anche madri presenti.
Ultimamente questo argomento mi fa riflettere perché tante donne prima di noi hanno lottato per avere parità di diritti rispetto agli uomini e ora riusciamo a vedere quanto le loro lotte stiano facendo la differenza. Ad oggi le donne ricoprono ruoli di prestigio in campi che in passato erano solo appannaggio maschile ma ci manca un po’ la terra sotto i piedi perché ci ritroviamo ad aver raggiunto dei risultati senza però che lo Stato e il sistema italiano si siano adeguati a questa nuova figura, contribuendo e dando sostegno per la gestione della famiglia.
