Patricia Armocida

Patricia has been suggested by Ceren. I know her contemporary art gallery because I've been there several times. I read her interviews and I wondered why we have never met in person in these years. Patricia is one of those women of inspiration for others, she is tenacious, has intuition and has the courage to make choices.

Ceren suggested me to ask you with which criterion you choose the artists to exhibit in your gallery. Reading the biography on your website that was pretty clear to me, so I change the question and ask you: what is the worst advice you received?
To tell the truth I received many, but fortunately, my instinct and my stubbornness have always guided me according to my ideas without the advice of others influencing me. Ten years ago, for example, when I decided to go to Os Gemeos in Glasgow to invite them to exhibit as the first artists of my future gallery, the person next to me advised me not to go because they would certainly say no and opening a gallery would have been insane because it was too risky. Although I was suggested to give up, I chose to continue on my way and I did well because Os Gemeos accepted and my gallery is still open.

Tell me about one of the latest discoveries you've made.
During my last trip to New York, a fellow Vietnamese gallery owner made me discover the Manhattan street where the Korean community lives, called Koreatown. In that city, I went often but ignored the existence of this small reality. A pleasant discovery.

What have you changed your mind about over the past two years and why?
A year and a half ago, the greatest revolution of my life took place.
I had my first child. This event has changed my perception of the world, of time and my ideas, on an extraordinary amount of topics.

If you were called to speak at a conference and did not have to talk about your work, what would you talk about?
Of music probably.

What comes to mind if you think of the conventional word?
Unconventional.

For those people who do not know how to turn to art, they do not know how to interpret it and for this, they are frightened by preferring the way of disinterestedness, what do you suggest? Give me five tips to bring people closer to contemporary art.

2. cultivate your own openness
3. Do not be afraid to ask questions
4. drink a glass of wine at the opening
5. get guided by an insider.

What do you find useful when you're feeling stagnant?
Move.

Is there anything you believe others think of as insane?
Have a gallery.

What would you write on a billboard in the center of Milan?
Open your mind, then your eyes. Following, possibly, the mouth.

• Your daily uniform: I've never had a daily uniform.
• The song of the heart: I Get Lifted by George McCrae
• Your perfume: I do not use perfume. Since I was sixteen I wore two drops of oil to the White Musk of The Body Shop, I never left it, it's very 90s. Even now the people of my generation approach me and hear me say "Ah I recognize it! How many things remind me ... "
• Favorite flowers: Ibiscus Rossi.
• Your comfort food: An Italian classic: Spaghetti al pomodoro, basil, extra virgin olive oil and a pinch of chili pepper.
• Your favorite art gallery: That which was, in 1981, the FUN Gallery in New York, Patti Astor, and Bill Stelling.
• A friend of yours to interview? What should I ask? Gloria Pasetto, is a dear friend whom I respect a lot. For his heart and his witty and brilliant mind. Beyond his job (he knows how to write very well and is a copywriter in a communication agency in Turin), he has been researching his personal and spiritual growth for several years. I would ask her what she understood and the awareness reached this point in her journey.

Ceren mi ha suggerito di chiederti con quale criterio tu scelga gli artisti da esporre nella tua galleria. Leggendo la biografia sul tuo sito mi è chiaro, quindi cambio domanda e ti chiedo quale sia il peggior consiglio che hai ricevuto?
A dire la verità ne ho ricevuti tanti ma, per fortuna, il mio istinto e la mia caparbietà mi hanno sempre guidata secondo le mie idee senza che i consigli altrui mi influenzassero. Dieci anni fa, per esempio, quando ho deciso di raggiungere Os Gemeos a Glasgow per invitarli ad esporre come primi artisti della mia futura galleria, la persona che avevo a fianco mi consigliò di non andare perché mi avrebbero certamente detto di no e aprire una galleria sarebbe stato una follia perché troppo rischioso. Nonostante mi sia stato suggerito di lasciare stare io ho scelto di proseguire per la mia strada e ho fatto bene perché Os Gemeos hanno accettato e la mia galleria è ancora aperta.

Raccontami una delle ultime scoperte che hai fatto.
Durante il mio ultimo viaggio a New York, un collega gallerista vietnamita mi ha fatto scoprire la via di Manhattan in cui vive la comunità coreana, chiamata appunto Koreatown. In quella città sono andata spesso ma ignoravo l’esistenza di questa piccola realtà. Una piacevole scoperta.

Su cosa hai cambiato idea negli ultimi due anni e perché?
Un anno e mezzo fa è avvenuta la più grande rivoluzione della mia vita. Ho avuto il mio primo figlio. Questo evento ha fatto mutare la mia percezione del mondo, del tempo e le mie idee, su una straordinaria quantità di argomenti.

Se ti chiamassero a parlare ad una conferenza e non dovessi parlare del tuo lavoro, di cosa parleresti?
Di musica probabilmente.

Cosa ti viene in mente se pensi alla parola convenzionale?
Anticonvenzionale.

Per quelle persone che non sanno come rivolgersi all'arte, non sanno come interpretarla e per questo si spaventano preferendo la via del disinteresse, tu cosa suggerisci? Dammi cinque consigli per avvicinare le persone all'arte contemporanea.

1. essere curiosi
2. coltivare la propria apertura mentale
3. non avere paura di fare domande
4. bere un bicchiere di vino agli opening
5. farsi guidare da un addetto ai lavori

Cosa trovi utile fare quando ti senti in una situazione stagnante?
Muovermi.

C'è qualcosa in cui credi che gli altri ritengono folle?
Avere una galleria.

Cosa scriveresti su un billboard al centro di Milano?
Apri la mente, poi i tuoi occhi. A seguire, eventualmente, la bocca.
